Admission to MD/MPH program confers eligibility for shared credits. The UTSPH will count up to 12 semester credit hours in approved shared credit courses taken in the MS curriculum. 9 of the 12 hours occur during the normal course of the MS curriculum and the remaining 3 credit hours come from the approved medical school electives.
• 5 core classes (16 hrs) Core Areas: Biostatistics, Env/Occ Health, Epidemiology, Health Promotion/Behav Sciences, Management, Policy & Comm Health
• Public Health Seminar (1 hour)
• Practicum Experience (3 hours) STEER counts as a practicum experience. The South Texas Environmental Education and Research (STEER) Program is a Senior medical elective that counts for 4 of the 18 required senior year (MS4) credits. Only MD/MPH students have the option to take STEER as their public health practicum between MS1 and MS2 for 3 semester credit hours in the UTSPH while also earning “forward credit” toward the senior elective requirement.
